Anticipating US Nationals 2012: The Ladies

US Nationals is almost here and it seems to be between Alissa, Mirai and Ashley.  Mirai hasn't won since she was a teenager and Ashley has never won.  Both will battle the two time champ Alissa Czisny.

Mirai Nagasu competed at Glacier Falls this summer to debut her lp which I find had better costuming than the grand prix series.  Hopefully for nationals she will go back to the dress seen here:

Mirai definitely has been drab in the grand prix this year, hopefully Frank Carroll will get this in order...

Ashley Wanger, smartly switched to John Nicks this year showing much improved jumps but can she get over her nemesis, the short program?  Time will only tell, this sure will be an interesting nationals.

Lastly we have Alissa who, like Mirai, had better costuming the first time her LP was debuted.  Hopefully we will also see something more like this at Nationals:

With Alissa being injured at the GPF, we have no idea which Alissa will show up, although I suppose we never really do, do we?  She could implode or could skate clean.  Although even if clean, she is somewhat weak with her jumps, I do not see her pulling of the 3/3's.  She will need to count on Mirai and Ashley to implode, which is always a possibility.

All in all, I think Rachael Flatt is out.  She hasn't been skating that well since 2010 and her priority is probably Stanford.   She is a smart girl, she should be extremely proud of all she has accomplished in her career.

Analyzing the Jumps of Gracie Gold:

Phil Hersh recently wrote about US Junior skater Gracie Gold.  Many are ridiculously predicting her to show up at Sochi already.  One quote from the article that is particularly astounding is the following:

The way Glenn and Berlin see it, there also hasn't been a U.S. woman skater with Gold's jumping ability since Tonya Harding.

I'm not so sure her jumps are quite as big as many are saying.  Sure, they're great, sure they're not wispy little jumps, but there isn't a comparison to Tonya.  Tonya's jumps were almost not even human. Gracie needs to work on her landings, they need to be held better, but this is something that many skaters these days seem to have trouble with.  What do you all think?

There have been many U.S. women with Tonya Harding-esque jumps, Bobek, Nikodinov and Zawadski just to name a few.

It seems too presumptuous to predict that a 16 year old junior skater will show up in Sochi and bring home the gold but it is an interesting topic and hey, it's fun to discuss especially with the US ladies being so dull lately.  It's great that Gracie won her first JGP, hopefully she will continue to improve.  She will need difficult transitions, difficult footwork, spins, choreography if she wants to make it to Sochi.  These things could all come in time for her, true, but there are many skaters that have that now.  I just don't see her beating the Russians but we'll have to see what happens at Junior Worlds this year, should be exciting!

Article is here.

Euro Nationals:

Apparently Carolina Kostner withdrew from Italian Nationals due to needing time to rest (probably from all those GP events).  The title went to Valentina.

Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic won Nationals for the 8th time beating Brezina.

(Ксения Макарова) Ksenia Does Clean Short:

Ksenia has finally done a clean short.  With all those hard falls from this year I'm sure this will be a boost to her confidence for Nationals.  Maybe her new psychologist is working after all?

Russian Nationals Predictions:

Post your predictions.  Will Plush show up?  I think he will, I predict he will win no matter how he does.  For the ladies, I think Adelina will get things together and win, Queen Tut 2nd, and Alena 3rd.

UPDATE:
Plush postpones an event.

Japanese National Predictons:

Post your predictions here.

I predict:

Ladies: Suzuki for Gold, Mao Silver.  However I'd love for Mao to win, it's just obviously going to be tough.

Men:  Dai for Gold, Yuzuru for Silver.

GPF ICE DANCE PREDICTIONS:

 vs.

Skaters weighing in on the New System, will it change?

So many skaters right now are letting their voice be heard on the new system.   Do you think with all this talk some things will eventually be changed in the new system?

Patrick Chan:

"We have much more complexity in our programs than the skaters in the 80s but the skating in the 80s was much more epic and much more memorable. There was a lot more uniqueness between each skater whereas nowadays it's almost become a production line," said Chan, who plans to introduce a quadruple-Salchow to his free skate by next month."

"Everyone's doing the same thing, just maybe in a different order. So I hope I can be somewhat of a throwback skater in the fact that I can bring excitement back. I can be like the black sheep of the herd, be different and be unique and be someone people will remember out of the 50 skaters at the world championships."

Dick Button:

Katarina Witt:

“They tried with the new scoring system to be more fair and, yes, maybe in a way it is more fair because it is more accountable. But figure skating in general is a different kind of sport and you have to accept it. You cannot compare figure skating with swimming where it’s about the fastest.”
Witt said figure skating has elements to which points just can’t be assigned. “I think one of the most important things in skating is emotions. Who touches your heart? Who makes you remember a program for the rest of your life?”

Marinna Anissina:  Discussed ice danced is becoming Americanized.

New Chan Article:

Article is here.

Mao Asada Withdraws from GPF:

I want to thank one of the Anonymous posters for first alerting the blog to this latest news.  This is really sad, Mao's mother is ill, let's all send her our thoughts and prayers.  Here is the icenetwork article.

This is so disappointing, I was really looking forward to seeing her skate, she's one of my favorite skaters.  Hopefully her and her mother will be ok. What a difficult year this has been for them with the earthquake and now this.

There will be no replacement so there will only be 5 ladies skaters at the GPF.

The Quad Lutz

Only two prominent men have attempted the quad lutz this year.  What's interesting about that is both men are from the US (and neither medaled.....).  As we all know the only one to succeed in that attempt was Brandon Mroz.  I mean he even had our beloved Rachael Maddow talking.  And since when does Rachael ever discuss figure skating?  Usually she's all about something drab (well ok not drab, politics is important, but you know what I mean) that you can catch on c-span, so even tho Brandon's programs are pretty boring, you have to give him credit for getting figure skating back on the news without it being some kind of Tonya Harding type drama.

The first recognized quad lutz:
The first quad lutz in an ISU event:

The other attempt was by Adam Rippon, who failed miserbly and couldn't even rotate it.  I'm guessing he won't be trying that at Nationals, what do you guys think?  I'm sure Brandon will try the quad lutz at Nationals though, as that's just.....about all he has is the jumps.. ahahaha.

Anonymous Posts are now allowed.

Welcome to Dick Flutz'n Figure Skating Blog.   This is a new blog so please be patient, I'm just learning how to use this blog.  I have now allowed Anonymous comments, if there is anything else you have a request for  the blog please leave a comment.  This is meant to be a fun place to talk about figure skating.  I will make sure to always leave many updates, I'm a major figure skating fan, I have been skating for 15 years so I will always continue to post about this sport.

This is a new figure skating blog named after the Legendary Figure Skater Dick Button.  Of course Uncle Dick would never do a Flutz, but it's fun to do a play on words and I'm sure he'd get a laugh or two out of it.

Grand Prix Final Countdown: The Men

USA broadcasting times for this event, are here.

Is this pretty much a no brainer that Chan will win this or what?

Surprising skaters who did not make the GPF include:  Kozuka and Oda.

Here are some videos of the men who made it to the GPF (In no particular order):

Patrick Chan:
What is there really to say?  There's a 99.9% chance that he'll win, he basically has a 5 fall cushion.

Jeremy Abbott:
Jeremy showed all those Judges from last year that he can still skate amongst the younger skaters.  Jeremy's long program is definitely a highlight, one of his best programs.  Hopefully he can make it to worlds this year.

Michal Brezina:
Skate America was Michal's best competition this season, here is his sp:

Yuzuru Hanyu
With Oda and Kozuka not making the GPF, Yuzuru is a real threat for the Japanese Nationals Podium.  Could he make it to worlds this year?

Daisuke Takahashi
The judges will probably keep his scores slightly close to Chan's just to pretend like this is an actual competition.

Javier:

This short program was the highlight of his season so far.  Beautiful quads, Brian has done a great job with him.  Javier definitely has been one of the biggest surprises this season.

What are you predictions for the GPF?

Plushenko: Which Way Will He GO??

There is talk that Plushenko will be at Russian Nationals this year.  With nationals just a few weeks away do you think he'll actually show up?

Grand Prix Final Countdown: The Ladies

This is a new figure skating blog named after the Legendary Figure Skater Dick Button.  Of course Uncle Dick would never do a Flutz, but it's fun to do a play on words and I'm sure he'd get a laugh or two out of it.

The ladies short program will be this Friday Dec. 9th.  The Grand Prix Event tv times are here.

The Grand Prix Final is almost here, it's exciting to say the least, but more importantly the talk is about who ISN'T going to be there.  Russia's own Adelina Sotnikova did not make it to the GPF unlike her Russian teammate Elizaveta Tuktamysheva.  Maybe it is for the best however as it is sort of embarressing Adelina's music and ending pose is stolen straight from Mao...

I have to say this year is going to be much better than most years, especially considering we won't have to deal with the likes of skaters like Rachael Flatt (who by the way recently got quite the bashing by the legendary Alexei Urmanov just check FSU for the interview post #629).  I have to say Alexei Urmanov was being so disrespectful commenting on Rachael's weight.  I mean yeah her skating isn't fun to watch, but to comment on her not being in shape is just rude.  It's not like Alexei was in that great of shape spin wise, I mean did you see his spins in Lillehammer?

Let's look back at the ladies who made the GPF.
In no particular order:

Mao Asada:
Not a fan of the SP 'outfit', hope she changes it to a skirt for the GPF or at least for worlds.  Mao has said she will upgrade later in the season although I doubt we will see the triple axel at the gpf, we might see a 3/3 attempt.

Carolina Kostner:
After doing three grand prix events will she be burnt out?

Akiko Suzuki:
The elder Japanese skater has been doing wonderfully the last few years, hopefully she will FINALLY be recognized by the judges at this years Japan Nationals.

Alena Leonova:
One of the sloppiest skaters Russia has to offer actually made it to the GPF.  This says a lot as she was not expected to be at the top with the likes of Adelina and Ksenia, but since they faltered, were are stuck with her...

Elizaveta  Tuktamysheva AKA Queen TUT:
Making her senior debut, Elizaveta did not look one bit nervous (unlike Adelina).  Is this a forecast of what the future will bring or is it just her youth that has eluded her nerves?

Queen Tut will most likely be the only skater to fully rotate rhw 3lutz/3toe at the gpf.

Alissa Czisny:
She probably will attempt her 3lutz/3toe here but chances are it won't be fully rotated.

Alissa's La Valse Triste is a beautiful program, but I much prefer the Japan Open version with the white dress:

Just for fun what are your predictions for the ladies?
Be sure to come back for updates on the men, pairs and dance.
